For the parents:
Class 9 continue to explore the world of organic chemistry. Yesterday and today we made soap from olive oil. Last week, we made and distilled alcohol, we made vinegar in two ways, a natural way with wild yeast, and a chemical way. We also extracted tea-tree oil from our school trees, and then made an artificial fragrant oil in a process that uses alcohols and organic acids. The students were excited in the change from stinky to fragrant!
This week we will look at making rayon, using sugar to make a mirror, and finally, the way the first plastics were made (from cellulose).
It is a fun challenge to work with so many students, but they are usually able to work together very well and smoothly!
