Dear parents of grade 9 students,

This last week, our theme was telecommunication in the main lesson. Interesting, communication also became an issue between you and me. My invitation to the beach for your children caused so much to communicate. For me, new in here, it is not only the language barrier but I am also not familiar with the ways of communication.

The whole situation is quite foreign to me. In this uncertain situation, I feel deep fear when taking decisions like this beach invitation. Despite my fear, I want to give such example to the grade 9 students. It is the issue of their age: getting aware of their own thinking and deal with it. There is no other way to overcome this threshold to enlightenment, but to overcome this fear. Class 9 students struggle very hard in my lessons and at the daily homework when I ask them to write down their own conclusions. Students may still be unaware of this fear connected with presenting something uncertain from our inside to the outside. They may just feel uneasy to do so.

In 1784, the German philosopher Immanuel Kant put this issue into beautiful words when he answered the question:

What is Enlightenment?

Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one's understanding without guidance from another. This immaturity is self-imposed when its cause lies not in lack of understanding, but in lack of resolve and courage to use it without guidance from another. Sapere Aude! "Have courage to use your own understanding!"--that is the motto of enlightenment.

And with "understanding" (or thinking) we are at the sphere affected by the technology we look onto in the third week of this main lesson: computing.

Although we are touching a 9th graders issue, this is also an issue very widely spread among us adults. After the Friday afternoon class, when we postponed our beach trip because of typhoon concerns, I still made this beach trip myself only.

The setting sun was swallowed by clouds. It was cool but not chilly. I let the waves touch my feet and calves. A refreshing wind blow into the sea waves not more than the other times I have been there before. However, this time there was nobody else on the beach. Even at the small restaurant behind the beach, there was nobody. Peacefully I observed the nature at dusk.

To the two students who would have come to the beach with me on Friday, I apologize for not giving this experience to them. And now I wish we will have a good trip to the beach on Thursday. What I initially intended to mark a good start of the main lesson, now turns to marking the end of this main lesson.

On Friday, I saw so many workbooks improved. I feel so relieved on this issue and want to thank you for your support.

With cordial greetings,

Teacher Felix

What is Enlightenment?

Sapere Aude!

Felix老師
